Geocache Description:

St John the Baptist, The Lea is one of six churches in the Benefice of Ariconium.

The earliest parts of the church date back to the 13th Century though it is understood that the site has been associated with religious buildings before that.  Originally The Lea was a hamlet with no true church and Linton, nearby, was the Mother church.  However in the winter of 1417/18 flooding was so bad that a petition was put before the Bishop and the church was consecrated so that baptism, marriage and burials could take place within the village.  The church as we see it today was extensively refurbished in 1846/7 and entry to the church changed from the south side to the north.
The tower houses three bells which are hung ‘dead’ and are struck by using ropes tied to hammers at the base of the tower known as an Ellacombe chime.  There is also a rather nice mural painted on the north wall that was restored in 2002 after being covered up for many years.
The church is open daily and is worth a look inside.
Access the cache from the churchyard, and, you should not need to leave the footpath.
The cache is placed by kind permission of the Rector and the PCC and thanks to Fish 'n' Rhino for their assistance.

While you are here why not seek one of the answers to the Ariconium Quest (GC4BFMP)?

If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
There is also a Church Micro Stats page found via the Bookmark list
