In the early 1900's, miniature golf was actually the short game of regulation golf. In the 1920's & 30's, rails appeared confining the ball within a boundary. Soon, Americans were hooked. The game was extremely popular among movie stars and celebrities which helped spawn new links all across the nation. During the 1930's, there were approximately 30,000 miniature golf courses throughout the country with over 150 rooftop courses in New York City alone. After the stock market crash of 1929, mini golf continued to flourish with obstacles created through the use of anything that could be scavenged; wagon wheels, barrels, pipes, etc. The 1980’s introduced adventure style courses at family entertainment centers and indoor glow-in-the-dark courses.
Mini golf is not only a fun leisure-time game, but also a sport that any gender, any age can excel at without being a well-conditioned athlete. Even a souris française can do it.
