Geocache Description:

Langley Park Village is situated on the west side of the River Brownie, about five miles north west of Durham City, and within half a mile of Witton Gilbert railway station (Still present although now a private house).  This cache is able to accommodate T/B's and swappables! There are 3 swappables present when published!

This is our first cache and  is located where the Langley Park Colliery Pit once stood. We felt that we had not seen many caches refering to the mining history of the North East so we felt that this area would be a good place to hide one.

The pit shaft itself was sunk in1874 and work began extracting the coal in 1876. The coal was worked by the Consett Iron Company. There are two seams, the Busty and the Hutton, of an average thickness of 4 feet, worked by a shaft 30 fathoms deep and a drift. The annual output amounted to 200,000 tons, which is entirely converted into coke, at the time giving employment to 500 men and boys.

The Colliery closed in 1975 and has been planted with many trees. The area is now a wildlife reserve and the Environment Agency have recently dug out some "scrapes" to encourage further nature development. This area is also a favorite of the locals for walking their dogs, a quiet walk or for a spot of fishing on the river.

Parking is available at the entrance to a small theme park but it is a much more plesant walk from the bridge at Langley Park itself. (Opposite Working Mans Club!)
