The 320 acre Ring Hill Forest was acquired to conserve rural forestlands, provide a buffer between rural residential development and agricultural uses in the Snoqualmie Valley, and provide revenue while demonstrating sustainable forestry. This cache gives a firsthand view of the Ring Hill Forest Stewardship Plan in action which is focused on creating a diverse, vigorous, and healthy forest that provides habitat as well as revenue.
Managed for their ecological value, these natural areas contain a diversity of native vegetation that provides fish and wildlife habitat and embodies the beauty and character of our region's landscape.
These lands often support wetlands, riparian areas, small lakes and ponds, and other vulnerable or rare habitats. Low-impact activities, such as walking, nature observation, and fishing are allowed, where appropriate, and horseback riding is also permitted on certain sites. Conservation Futures helped protect this forest from ever becoming developed and will be managed as a sustainable working forest.
This cache was placed as part of the 30th Anniversary Celebration of the use of Conservation Futures. Since 1982, King County had partnered with cities, nonprofit groups and civic leaders to protect 111,000 acres of land from development including 99,000 acres of Cascade foothills; 3,200 acres of urban greenbelts and parks; 4 miles of Puget Sound shoreline; 4,700 acres of riparian habitat on rivers and creeks; and leveraged $150 million in matching funds.
