Cache is hidden near the Jūrkalne's Roman Catholic church.
Jurkalne is a thinly settled village that is situated on a shore of Baltic Sea, about 72 km north from Liepaja and 50 km south from Ventspils. The former fishermen village today is populated with only 432 inhabitants and is a nice and quite place for perfect relaxation and recovery. The coast of Jurkalne is continuing for about 13 kilometres. It varies from flat 5-35 meters wide beaches till 16-18 meters high buffs, that are recognized as the highest buffs in the whole Latvian sea coast. Though Jurkalne is a small settlement, it still can offer a few places for accommodation or camping and several sightseeing points. If there is a wish, it is possible to get a glass of fresh milk for breakfast from local farmers.
History
There is a legend about an establishment of the village. Once a medieval ship got into a storm near Jurkalne. The crew of the ship was deathly afraid that they won’t be able to reach the shore. Their captain promised that if they will be lucky to escape the storm and to find a shore, the church will be built nearby that place. In this way the first wooden church appeared in Jurkanle. In fact, at that time Jurkalne was named as Feliksberga – the Lucky hill. In the middle ages, Jurkalne was known also as Jorencel, Lower Village and Pilsberg. The Duke Peter Biron reconstructed the wooden chapel into a stone church in 1786. In addition, in 1870, the stone church tower was elevated. The village for ages was functioning as a fishermen village. It was given its present name Jurkalne only in 1928.
