The Monolith Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

Smapte: Holy smokes, there seems to have been a collapse of some of the trees on the ridge above GZ. The grounds are a mess, and I can't locate the cache anymore. There was always deadfall here but this is ridiculous. The terrain and difficulty ratings certainly don't match the original listing. And to add insult to injury, the Stage 1 location was replaced with a non-magnetic material! So I think it's time to archive this one. If anyone happens to have seen the final stage since the tree collapse please message me to let me know!

Geocache Description:

This 2-stage multi was created in tribute to the great Stanley Kubrick film, 2001: A Space Odyssey.  It should be fairly easy for beginners, and is intended to be a family friendly cache with lots of room for swag.

Stage 1: The Monolith on the Moon
The listed coordinates will take you to the first of two monoliths.  This stage will assess your readiness and send you off on the Jupiter Mission to stage 2.  This monolith is a black magnetic hide-a-key box that contains coordinates for stage 2.

Stage 2: Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite
The North coordinates are N 34°00.AAA  The West coordinates are W 084°18.BBB.  Enter the final digits found at Stage 1 and launch your mission to Jupiter.  The Stage 2 monolith is a regular-sized lock & lock.  Locate the black slab, utter the phrase, “Open the pod bay door please, Hal,” and enter.  Psychedelic wormhole not included.  And yes, it’s full of stars.

Details about the location:
This multi-cache is located in a rarely-used 2.5-acre public green space.  For many years it was known as Terramont Park, and boasted a baseball diamond and playground equipment.  However, when Holcomb Bridge was widened the parking lot area was eliminated and the park was removed from Roswell’s official park listings.  The aging playground equipment was removed and the only feature that remains these days is the aging baseball diamond backstop.

In 2010 and 2011 the city considered converting the space into a new fire station that would replace the current station located just up Holcomb Bridge Rd.  However, neighboring residents expressed concerns about the noise associated with an active fire station and plans were put on hold.  For now the space is open to the public, although still not officially designated a park.  Permission was granted by the city to place a cache here.

Parking is limited so please use the included waypoints for parking.  Roswell police occasionally monitor traffic from the Holcomb Bridge access road, so you may also access the park from the entry path in the Terramont Subdivision.  Please be considerate of the private property that borders the park and do not cross any fences into any residents’ yards.
