A cache in the Azilakas forest over Krasi.
Μια κρύπτη στο Αζιλακόδασος πάνω από το Κράσι.
Azilakas is the Cretan name for Quercus ilex, the Holm Oak or Holly Oak, a large evergreen oak native to theMediterranean region. It takes its name from holm, an ancient name for holly. In the rest of Greece it’s called Aria Oak. It’s a rare tree, well-adjusted in the Mediterranean ecological system, that can survive extreme conditions.
In Greece it is found in the Cretan mountains and in some of the Aegean islands. In Crete, at the foot of Mt Selena at a relatively high altitude, there is a rare Azilakas forest. The forest is dense and unspoilt and the trees are often higher than 5 meters.
We placed the cache by an Azilakas tree. It’s at a junction of trails leading to Krasi, Azilakas Forest (Azilakodasos) and Chamoprina. You can see our track here: Krasi -Azilakodasos - Malia at EveryTrail

Αζίλακας είναι η κρητική ονομασία του δέντρου Quercus ilex που στην υπόλοιπη Ελλάδα ονομάζεται Αριά ή Άριος Δρυς. Η Αριά είναι είδος, ανθεκτικό σε ακραίες συνθήκες, με εξαιρετική προσαρμογή στις οικολογικές συνθήκες της Μεσογείου.
Ο Αζίλακας είναι ένα σπάνιο δέντρο, κάτι μεταξύ βελανιδιάς και πρίνου, που συναντάται στα ορεινά της Κρήτης και κάποιων νησιών του Αιγαίου. Στο Κράσι, σε μεγάλο σχετικά υψόμετρο στις πρόποδες της Σελένας, υπάρχει ένα από τα ελάχιστα ίσως δάση από Αζιλάκους. Το δάσος είναι πυκνό και παρθένο, ενώ τα δέντρα ξεπερνούν σε ύψος τα 5 μέτρα.
Τοποθετήσαμε την κρύπτη κοντά σε ένα Αζίλακα σε κομβικό σημείο μονοπατιών: Μπορεί κανείς να πάει Αζιλακόδασος ή Κράσι ή Χαμόπρινα. Μπορείτε να δείτε την πορεία μας εδώ: Krasi -Azilakodasos - Malia at EveryTrail
