Dead Bull's Dig Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

espargosas: I have not been able to visit this cache for some time which, in any event, required maintenance. So, I have decided to disable the cache which is a pity because it draws attention to some extremely interesting archaeological finds at the foot of the hill.

Geocache Description:

This cache commemorates a long time back in human evolution

Circumstance, i.e. the muggling of the original Stage 1, has made the title of this cache inappropriate in part. The general location of the cache is BOI (Bull in English). So Stage 1 originally consisted of an ancient skull of a bull within which could be found the coordinates of the final cache site. This was muggled and is now replaced, at the given coordinates, with an item that is unlikely to be muggled and on which is inscribed the last 3 digits of the final northing and westing coordinates. The ‘Dig’ relates to an archaeological dig visible in the valley immediately beneath the site of Stage 1 and located at N37º 05.393’; W008º 48.519’ which is ongoing as at August 2012. Excavation work is being undertaken by archaeologists from the University of Gambelas. The site was first identified in 2002 and is dated to the Early Upper Paleolithic Phase or Old Stone Age, specifically about 32,000 years ago. The stone at this location is mainly: chert, quartz and greywacke which provides the source for the hunter-gatherers of those times to fashion double-backed and pinpointed weapons for use as arrow-heads and for flaying tools etc. For historical perspective it is worth noting that the >300 menhirs which abound in the region of Vila do Bispo date back only to some 6-7,000 years ago.
