La muralla que hoy podemos apreciar es, en su mayoría, medieval, aunque buena parte de ella corresponde a construcciones de los siglos XVII al XIX, modificaciones de la muralla para dotar a la ciudad de un potente sistema defensivo adaptados a las necesidades que los nuevos tratados militares imponían y a la cada vez más moderna artillería, construyendo todo el sistema de fosos, falsabragas, baluartes y revellines; sustituyendo las almenas y merlones por cañoneras; distribuyendo a lo largo de la muralla garitas de vigilancia; ampliando y pavimentando el adarve de la muralla para facilitar el acceso de los cañones y los movimientos de tropas, además de afianzar las bóvedas de las puertas del Conde, del Rey y del Sol. Las obras realizadas durante esta época dejaron a Ciudad Rodrigo prácticamente como ahora podemos contemplarla.
