In ancient Greece, the great rival of Athens was Sparta, the city-state also called Lacedaemon.
From the vigorous iron-hearted warriors of this city-state has come the adjective Spartan. Sparta prided itself not on art, learning, or splendid buildings, but on its valiant men who "served their city in the place of walls of bricks."
The Spartan armies, though usually quite small, were well-disciplined and all but irresistible in combat. Each citizen soldier was inspired by the resolve to win or die. The Spartan mother, when she gave her son his shield, would say: "Bring back this shield yourself or be brought back upon it," referring to the manner in which the dead were carried on their shields from the battlefield.
Among Sparta's most heroic achievements was the stand taken by its 300 fighting men and their King Leonidas at the battle of Thermopylae in 480 BC, during the Persian Wars. You can read the historic fiction Gates Of Fire by Steven Pressfield, a very interesting and informative book about the Spartan way of life and thinking and the battle at Thermopylae.
The ancient city of Sparta was destroyed by Visigoths in AD 396. The modern town of Sparta (or Sparti) was built in 1834 after the War of Greek Independence.
The cache is a medicine canister hidden on the hill near the city center of Sparti where the remains of ancient Sparta are situated. Excavations still take place in the area, so the site is not yet officially an archaeological site. It is protected but the entrance is free for the moment. Access is possible from 08:30-15:30 in the winter and 08:30-16:00 in summer. The ancient remains are found in the heart of an olive tree grove and locals often go jogging around the place.
To get to the site, get to the statue of King Leonidas in the city center, go round the stadium following the signs and you are there. See the parking WP.

Η Σπάρτη, η πόλη-κράτος των Λακεδαιμόνιων, ήταν στην αρχαία Ελλάδα ο μεγάλος αντίπαλος της Αθήνας.
Η Σπάρτη δεν υπερηφανεύονταν για την τέχνη, τη γνώση και τα έξοχα οικοδομήματα, αλλά για τους ατρόμητους άνδρες της που «υπεράσπιζαν την πατρίδα τους ως να ήταν τα τείχη της».
Ο στρατός της Σπάρτης, αν και μικρός στον αριθμό, ήταν απόλυτα πειθαρχημένος και ανίκητος στη μάχη. Το ιδανικό κάθε άνδρα ήταν να νικήσει ή να πεθάνει. Είναι γνωστή η φράση της Σπαρτιάτισσας μάνας όταν έδινε στο γιο της την ασπίδα του: «Ή τάν ή επί τάς!», ή θα φέρεις έσύ ο ίδιος την ασπίδα πίσω ή θα σε φέρουν νεκρό πάνω της.
Το πιο διάσημο πολεμικό επίτευγμα της Σπάρτης ήταν η ηρωική μάχη του βασιλιά Λεωνίδα και των 300 μαχητών στις Θερμοπύλες το 480 π.Χ. κατά τους Περσικούς πολέμους. Το ιστορικό μυθιστόρημα του Στίβεν Πρέσσφιλντ «Οι Πύλες της Φωτιάς», είναι ένα πολύ ενδιαφέρον βιβλίο, αρκετά διαφωτιστικό για τον τρόπο ζωής και τη νοοτροπία των Σπαρτιατών, καθώς και για τη Μάχη των Θερμοπυλών.
Η αρχαία Σπάρτη καταστράφηκε από τους Βησιγότθους το 396 μ.Χ. Η σύγχρονη πόλη της Σπάρτης χτίστηκε το 1834, αφότου η Ελλάδα κέρδισε την ανεξαρτησία της.
Η κρύπτη είναι ένα κουτάκι από φάρμακα κρυμμένο στο λόφο πάνω από το κέντρο της πόλης, όπου βρίσκονται τα αρχαία. Οι ανασκαφές συνεχίζονται ακόμα, οπότε ο χώρος δεν είναι επίσημα αρχαιολογικός χώρος, δεν υπάρχει εισιτήριο. Είναι προστατευμένοςκαι επισκέψιμος τον χειμώνα τις ώρες 08:30-15:30 και το καλοκαίρι τις ώρες 08:30-16:00. Τα αρχαία είναι διάσπαρτα ανάμεσα σε ελιές και οι ντόπιοι πάνε συχνά εκεί για βόλτα ή τζόγκιν.
Για να πάτε στο χώρο της κρύπτης, πρέπει να φτάσετε στο άγαλμα του Λεωνίδα στο κέντρο της Σπάρτης και να πάτε γύρω από το στάδιο ακολουθώντας τις πινακίδες. Δείτε το σημείο για πάρκιν που δίνεται.
Αν οι συντεταγμένες δεν σας βοηθούν, ρίξτε μια ματιά στις φωτογραφίες! Προσέχετε τους κοινούς θνητούς γύρω σας και, παρακαλώ, κρύψτε το κουτάκι προσεκτικά πάλι, φροντίστε να μη φαίνεται από το έδαφος. Μην ξεχάσετε το στυλό σας!
