Geocache Description:

Welcome to Weston Park Museum - a fantastic family friendly museum close to Sheffield city centre - it's open every day, and entrance is free. Click here for more detail about facilities, access and opening times.

This multi cache has a trail of questions which encourages you to explore the museum and its exhibits. It's definitely not a cache and dash, so please take time to properly enjoy the museum. The answer to each question is a number which you will plug into a formula at the end to get the co-ordinates to final physical cache outside. The answers to all the questions will be found inside the museum, so do make sure the museum is actually open!

A museum has been on this site since 1875, and has gone through a series of evolutionary steps since then, most recently when the previous Sheffield City Museum and Mappin Art Gallery metamorphosed into Weston Park Museum following a £17 million pound redevelopment in 2006. For more details on the museum itself, please visit the website.

The museum is fully wheelchair accessible. Unfortunately there is no dedicated car park for the museum, although there are university car parks nearby that can be used at the weekend, and there are paid parking spaces on Mushroom Lane, next to the Museum. Click here for more detail about facilities, access and opening times.

To get the coordinates, answer the following questions:

  • Around the Museum
    1. Between the shop and the entrance find the ‘Weston Park Weather Station’ exhibit. What number is the tipping-bucket rain gauge? A
    2. Find the 'Sheffield through the Ages' painting just outside Sheffield Life and Times. What time does the star say hostilities cease at? BC
  • Sheffield Life and Times
    1. What is the number of the house in Mushroom Lane? DE
    2. At 'Scotland Street', what number did Ann Shimeld live at? FG
    3. At 'Strike Action' what number is the Margaret Thatcher toilet roll? H
  • What on Earth
    1. Find Spike, the Wooly Rhinoceros. How many horns does it have? I
    2. Find the birds above your head at 'Over South Yorkshire Skylines'. What number is the sparrowhawk? The list to the left of the large bird display cabinet should help. J
  • Beneath Your Feet
    1. There is a map of excavations that have been made in the local area as you enter the exhibit. What number is Sheffield Castle? KL
    2. Find the rock art made by Neolithic communities, labelled 19 in its cabinet. How many circular indents are on the rock? M
  • Sheffield Stories
    1. Under 'Neighbourhood', what number is the bus to Lower Walkley? NO

Now take the answers you have and put them into the below formulae to get the coordinates:

  • N53 [I] [N - O] . [J] [E + H] [B + C]
  • W001 [L -K] [F + G] . [M - O - O] [G - H] [A + L]

You can validate your puzzle solution with certitude. So now you have the final co-ordinates. Well what are you waiting for! The final physical cache is outside. There is no need to climb anything to retrieve it and it is wheelchair accessible, so please respect the park and museum grounds when searching for it.
