Geocache Description:

This cache is located in a neighborhood park used by many. There are muggles about at certain times during the day and early evenings. You may need a tool, like tweezers, to extract the log. Please put the cache back after logging your find so others can enjoy the hunt and the experience of geocaching as well. Bring your camera (and if you are like me, your sketchbook) because you have many views of the northeast corner of Chico and Upper Bidwell Park.

Fairy shrimp are easily identified in vernal pools. They appear as 1/2 to 1 1/2 inch crustaceans swimming upside down (ventral side up). Vernal pool fairy shrimp are threatened by continued human efforts to drain and fill vernal pool watersheds for agriculture and development purposes. Stormwater run-off containing pesticides, chemical residues and other contaminants are heavily impacting remaining shrimp populations as well. The vernal pool fairy shrimp can be found in vernal pools from Mt. Shasta south to Riverside County, CA. The conservancy fairy shrimp has been classified as a United States Federal Endangered Species (Federal Register 59:48136; September 19, 1994).

Like the small fairy shrimp, this cache is a nano and it is very near a vernal pool. BYOP and simply sign your initials.

Throughout this park there are groups of trees that were planted by Chico Park Watch volunteers (including me) in conjunction with efforts of the Hollywood Beautification Team on April 27, 2002. The 58 trees are one of two September 11th Memorial Groves that were planted in California to honor the 58 Californians who lost their lives on September 11, 2001. There is also a memorial plaque not far from the cache. The other grove was planted in southern California in the Los Angeles area.
