Geocache Description:

The Arctic Cirle Trail

The Arctic Circle Trail is the most famous hiking trail in Greenland. It connects Sisimiut at the west coast of Greenland with about 5500 inhabitants (Greenlands' second largest city!) and Kangerlussuaq with its international airport close to the inland ice.
The trail is about 160-170 km long and starts at the east end of Sisimiut and ends in Kellyville, a very tiny village about 15 km west of Kangerlussuaq. Climbing up next to the Kaellingehaetten you will leave behind civilisation very quickly and enter an fantastic adventure with widely untouched nature and lots of unforgettable moments. Every now and then you can find shelter in one of the huts, which can be used by hikers for free. As there is no chance to buy any food on the way, keep in mind to carry everything with you for the complete tour!

Seasonal Access

In summertime the trail should be free of snow and ice from mid of June to mid of September. Especially in the early summer the rivers might be deep and it can become dangerous to cross them. Anyway, to walk the complete track you should plan at least 7 or 8 days (or 5 if you are Greenlandic ). If you prefer to enjoy the nature without being in a hurry, I recommend to take at least 10-12 days. Especially if the weather changes, you will be happy about the luxury to spent a day in a hut instead of hiking hours in drenching rain.
If you do the ACT in winter, you can do it with a dog-sled, snow-mobile, country-skis or off-road-vehicles. Depending on your equipment and condition you will need between one day (if using offraod-vehicle) and several days when going with skis or sled. It should be possible to find the final box in winter time as well!

The Cache

Many thanks to Kangerlussuaq and kalakgl who will keep the cache in good shape when any maintenance becomes necessary. I am really happy that these two guys help me with the maintenance.
After doing the ACT in 2009, I was planning my second trip along the ACT in 2012. I was wondering, that there is still no cache covering the trail. To connect two hobbies, hiking and geocaching, I decided to built this multi cache. That's the result...
The cache is located in the area of Kangerlussuaq and you can easily log it when hiking the ACT from Sisimiut to Kangerlussuaq. This cache is not located directly next to the trail, but you will have to take a little hike detour. Trust me: the view will be absolutely worth the two extra kilometers!
If you walk the other direction, you should have a look at this cache!

In six of the huts (see waypoints!) along the Arctic Circle Trail you can find two flat washers each about 3 cm in diameter as exemplary shown on the picture below. Each washer has embossed either a letter or a single-digit number. Please note, that everytime the letter or number are embossed twice to the according washer. Be careful not to mistake any letters or numbers (e.g. 3 and B).
For example: if you find the following two flat washers in one hut, you should note 'B=8'.

The complete distance for this cache will be about 160 km and you will need several days to complete the cache! Please keep in mind that you can't buy any supplies on your tour. When walking, you should consider telling the local authorities, when you plan to arrive at your destination!

The cache is hidden at the following coordinates about a kilometer off the Arctic Circle Trail with a fantastic view:
N 66° (A*B*C-F).(C*D*E)
W 50° (E*E-B).(A*C*D-A*F)

For the case, you are not able to find all the information, use these additional information:
1. The letters you will find are: A, B, C, D, E and F - but not in this order!
2. The sum of the numbers you'll find at all six stages equals 28!
This gives you the chance to complete the cache, after you found at least 5 letters and 5 numbers. So you might feel free to walk detour and leave out any of the huts/stages.

Log

After it took you several days to complete this cache please take some time and share some of your best moments along the ACT with the geocaching community. I would be very happy and thankful if you add some photos to your log as well.

Have a good and safe tour and enjoy the trip!
Best wishes
TriNitro

ps: If you have some time left, I recommend that you continue your hike to the inland ice - you really should not miss it!
