There's no extra waypoints for the information you need to collect, you have to keep your head up, your eyes open, and not be following an arrow. This is, after all, a nicely urban Geocache - you could well bump into someone if you're not looking where you're going! Obviously, being in such an urban environment, different people's GPS readings may appear to be slightly different - my advice here is to employ some curiosity, some sense, and some eyeballs.
The thermometer tells you some information that's probably a little out of date these days, but how many degrees west of true north was the compass pointing in 1955?
Walking uphill, you come to Maidstone's Town Hall, which dates back to Georgian times. The town hall has been used as market space, a magistrate's court, council chambers, and as a gaol. The gaol is located in the loft, and the walls are apparently covered with 18th century graffiti! Take a note of the date below your feet.
John Brenchley, Maidstone benefactor and founder of the Kentish Bank, is attached to the former home of this institution. Standing near him, at the Post Office, there's some old men. In part, these men played a part in shaping the town's history. One of these men is William Caxton, England's first printer, who published the first book printed in English in 1476. Another of these men is Sir John Lubbock, the first Lord Avebury and MP for Maidstone. He was responsible for a number of social reforms, including the introduction of Bank Holidays in 1872. How many old men are standing there?
One of the hardest fought battles of the English Civil War happened in 1648. What month was the Battle of Maidstone?
When few people could read, signs used to indicate what was for sale. For many years there was a gunsmith down Bank Street. How many guns are above number 85?
Several of the historic buildings in Maidstone were pargetted; they have a plaster decoration applied to the walls. Number 78 has a coat of arms, and also the feathers of Henry, Prince of Wales in 1610. Count the number of feathers.
Rather unglamorously, the oldest dated building in Maidstone, is now a Kebab shop. You should be able to see a date here. Please note it.
Continuing to walk round the island of buildings between High Street and Bank Street, you should be able to find a bird, and a ship. How many letters are below the Wren? Ignore the 'WP' - these are the initials of Wilson Parker, who came up with the design of this coin. And the Ha'penny Ship, designed by Humphrey Padgett (hence the HP initials) has a date on it. What is that date? Lastly, how many obvious discs can you see in total here?
The logbook can be found at:-
N 51 AB.CDE E 00 FG.HIJ
A = (_ deg West of True North) - 7
B = (Maidstone Town Hall 17_3)
C = (_ old men standing around) - 1
D = Battle of Maidstone month
E = Guns + 3
F = Henry's feathers
G = (Oldest date 1_00) - 4
H = (Letters below the Wren) - 6
I = (Ship's date 196_)
I = (Total discs) + 5
Now, with some simple maths, and some filling in the gaps, you should have all the information that you need to find the final. GO SIGN IT!!
Apologies that it's only a nano, but hopefully, getting to this point has brought some things to your attention that not everyone notices as they go about their business in Maidstone. If you've got this far, thanks for reading, and completing (or about to complete) my Geocache. Hope it was some fun for you!
