Geocache Description:

A 30ml tube, parking can be found at the church, then a short walk through the church yard

The medieval church of St. Peter lay isolated atthe northern end of the village on the banks of theBrue. The site is marked by the remains of thechurchyard wall, a heap of rubble around the remains of the porch, and a few scattered gravestones. It was a small stone building comprising chanceland nave with a large south porch and small squarebellcot, possibly of wood, on the west gable end. There were two square-headed mullioned windowsof two lights each in the south wall of the chanceland nave, and also a Decorated window in the southchancel wall. Inside the porch was a heavy carveddoor, surmounted by a canopied niche with corbelunder, and to the right of the door a Decoratedstoup. Reference is made to a tower in 1756 and1761. The proximity of the church to the riverevidently led to periodic flooding; in 1786 a wallwas swept away by the 'late great flood', and in1799 the church was cleaned after an 'inundation'. In 1864 the parishioners decided to rebuild thechurch on a new site, the old building being dilapidated, damp, and inconvenient.

“If anybody would like to expand to this series please do, I would just ask that you could let Sadexploration know first so he can keep track of the Church numbers and names to avoid duplication.
