Geocache Description:

The cache is by the Cairns Convention Centre, which during 7-14 July 2012 hosted the International Coral Reef Symposium with more than 2000 participants from around the World. Please make sure it's not more visible than necessary after you've logged it.

Cairns is known as "The Gateway to the Great Barrier Reef". And coral reefs are known as the "rainforests of the seas", with a biodiversity that by far exceeds any other marine environment. But while the GBR is in comparatively good shape & a wonderful place to visit, coral reefs around the World are under serious threat of degradation and extinction, from local and global stressors including sedimentation, eutrophication, overfishing, destructive fishing, coastal development, crown-of-thorns sea-stars, warmer oceans and ocean acidification. In the Coral Triangle (including PNG, the Philippines, Indonesia & more; the area with the highest coral and reef fish diversity) 85% of reefs are currently "redlisted", mostly due to local stressors. But so far, excellent reefs can be seen not far from Cairns. Go see them and enjoy!

The CO resides in distant lands, but local cacher biggles58 has very kindly offered to take care of any maintenance required. But please help keep the cache in shape.
