The Wheeler family patented this land through the Homestead Act in 1924 and began farming, but soon found that it was not profitable enough to sustain the family year round. Lillian Wheeler eventually received much of the land and together with her husband built additional cabins on the site and began developing it as a resort. The property remained in the family until the 1970s and continues to operate as a ranch resort.

The Ute Trail River Ranch is located right on County Road 77 (Tarryall Road) and parking is available. The cache is accessible from the parking lot.
