East Leadville was first platted in 1879, four years after the founding of nearby Horseshoe. There has been some speculation that the towns were one in the same but more recent research suggests otherwise. Like many mining towns in South Park, the community saw great success in its early years but became a relative ghost town after the silver crisis in 1893. Today, it is hard to imagine that a bustling mining town once existed on this site.

From highway 285, take County Road 18 (Fourmile Road) west, which leads directly to the site of East Leadville.
