Di per sé il nome Isola delle Correnti è già molto suggestivo. Questa splendida isola è unita alla Sicilia da una fine lingua di pietra, che in base alla marea si presenta parzialmente sommersa. L’isola si trova nello specchio di mare di fronte al comune di Portopalo di Capo Passero, in provincia di Siracusa.
L’Isola delle Correnti incanta per la sua bellezza selvaggia ed incontaminata. Nell’isola si trova una struttura militare ormai fuori uso, un suggestivo faro e una scogliera incantevole. L’isola non è particolarmente ricca di vegetazione, che è comunque prevalentemente costituita dalla macchia mediterranea, e le poche abitazioni in essa presenti sono costituite dalla residenza dove un tempo risiedeva il guardiano del faro assieme alla sua famiglia; anch’esse comunque sono ormai abbandonate da tempo. Ciò che affascina di questa Isola è che essa rappresenta una sorta di confine ideale tra il Mar Ionio ed il Mar Mediterraneo. Le correnti (da qui il nome dell’isola), che si generano dall’incontrarsi di questi due splendidi mari, danno vita a spumose onde che si infrangono sulle coste dei dintorni.
Sull'isolotto cresce poca flora, ma vi abbondano piantine di porro selvatico, capperi e altri arbusti tipici della macchia mediterranea.
Dal 1987 l'isoletta è stata inclusa nel piano regolatore dei parchi e riserve naturali.
Nella zona dell’isola delle Correnti inoltre passano, durante il periodo delle migrazioni, gli uccelli che dalle coste Nordafricane vanno verso le coste della Sicilia. Osservare questo fenomeno, per chi ne ha la fortuna, è davvero uno spettacolo mozzafiato.

The name Isola della Correnti (Isle of Currents) is by itself very impressive. This beautiful island is connected to Sicily by a fine language of stone, which according to the tide comes partially submerged. The island is located in the area of sea in front of the village of Portopalo, in the province of Syracuse. The Isola delle Correnti attracts with its wild beauty and pristine. The island has a military building no longer in use, a picturesque lighthouse and a beautiful reef. The island is not particularly rich in vegetation, which is still predominantly made up of the Mediterranean, and the few houses in it were the residence of the lighthouse keeper and his family, however, they are actually abandoned. The fascinating aspect of this island is that it represents a kind of ideal boundary between the Ionian Sea and the Mediterranean Sea. The currents (hence the name of the island), which generate by the meeting of these two beautiful seas, give rise to foamy waves crashing on the nearby shores. Flora on the island grows very little, but there are plenty of wild leek seedlings, capers and other shrubs typical of the Mediterranean. Since 1987 the island was included in the master plan of parks and nature reserves. In the area of the Isola delle correnti during the period of migration, you can watch the birds from the North African coast flying to the coast of Sicily.
