Geocache Description:

Another lovely Church Micro to add to the collection!

Welcome to St Mary's Church, Sheering.
This is a well attended church, please respect the area when visiting.
There is plenty of parking next to the church hall and 2 nice pubs nearby if you want to stop for lunch.

The co-ordinates above bring you to a footpath leading into the church grounds and here you will find the answers to 5 questions. You do not have to stray from the path.

But first a few facts:
A pretty village church which has a long history dating back to 12th century Norman times. The Domesday survey indicates that Sciringa (or Sheering) was held in Edward Confessor's time by three freemen. It had the distinction of being one of the only two villages to possess a mule - the other being in Norfolk.

The present building, apart from the North Aisle, stands on the site of a 12th Centuruy church. The roof of the Nave was erected between 1316 and 1320 and restored in the 1970's. The central purlin is 40ft long and without a join. The timber is reputed to be from Hatfield Forest. The unusual clock faces were added in the late 1940's as part of the Sheering War Memorial.
Inscribed on the stone arch of the main doorway are marks and lines, reputedly made by men going on the Crusades - a vertical mark when leaving and a horizontal line to complete the cross on their return.
More recently the church was badly damaged by fire in January 2010. It was thanks to a local lady phoning the Fire Service and their hard work upon arrival at the church that saved the building and it's contents from total destruction. The church has now been fully restored.

We have been given permission by the current vicar to use the church as a cache site, but he has asked that it not be within the graveyard. This is why it is a Church Micro Multi and hidden a short distance away but still in sight of the churchyard.
