Geolympix 2012 CITO - Giving something back Cache In Trash Out Event

This cache has been archived.

metal-bijou: No new logs for a while so I'm guessing most have caught up with the day.

So there were a 180 people at this point who have completed attended logs to date. Amazing turn out, a big thank you to all.

Geocache Description:

Where: Following a path from South Hinksey to New Hinksey. Walking through the wonderful local countryside of our host city for the Geolympix. The path is known as the “Devil’s Backbone” and is a historic raised pathway for foot and cycle across the neighbouring flood plains between Oxford and village. The Devil’s Backbone pathway features in the poem The Scholar Gipsy by Matthew Arnold in 1853.

CITO

When: From 6:45pm on Sunday July 22nd 2012.

What: Inspired by a previous CITO event in Oxford in 2010 along Donnington Bridge/Weirs Lane. With excellent support and assistance from OxClean (@Ox_Clean) and Oxford City Council we are able to give something back to our host community and litter pick in what will hopefully be a fun atmosphere.

Dress for the occasion – Please wear appropriate shoes or boots that are sturdy and protective. Gloves would be especially useful, preferably leather or with rubberised palms. Litter pickers (grabbers) will be supplied by OxClean.

Sharps – It is not expected to find sharps along this route however there will be a sharps kit within the group. If needles or syringes are spotted then please leave and we will either pick up with the sharps kit or report for pick up by the council.

Briefing – Please try to arrive for the start of the event for quick briefing on Health and Safety and how to report dangerous items. There will be a Sign In sheet which we ask all volunteers to complete once they have had the briefing.

Sacks and Litter collection – The council have kindly identified a location to leave the filled and unused sacks overnight which will be collected first thing on Monday morning.

Who: All cachers welcome!

  • Young, old or undecided. There will be water nearby in areas so please be careful to supervise the very young, including the young at heart like myself.
  • Two legs or four.
  • Local cachers, those who have attended the Geolympix ( GC22T2T ) and of course anyone who just wants to get stuck in and help clear up a bit of countryside.
Access: Unfortunately there are a series of steps across the railway line and therefore this is not wheelchair friendly throughout the route. However it is wheechair friendly from Lake street which is where everyone will end up. Join us there where you will find Hinksey Park which while is not in dire need of clearing out, there was a little rubbish there when recently visited.

CITO Cache In Trash Out is an ongoing environmental initiative supported by the worldwide geocaching community. Since 2002, geocachers around the world have been dedicated to improving parks and other cache-friendly places. Through these volunteer efforts, we help preserve the natural beauty of our outdoor resources! To find out more click HERE.
