Geocache Description:

An ammo can containing, in addition to geocache swag, a rubber stamp and pad for exchanging letterbox impressions. Access is by rough and rocky dirt road but does not require 4WD. May be muddy and sometimes closed by snow in winter.

Best approach is from the hamlet of Strawberry. Go out Fossil Creek Road, then take FR 428 to the left toward the Retreat Center. Follow 428 to 194. There will be a sign that says "Twin Buttes 5 miles". From there trust your GPSr. Black Jack was so dubbed as a result of his penchant for dressing Johnny Cash style all in black.  Jackson was a rather menacing character who lived up in the Blackjack pines (ponderosas) and went to town only to gamble at his favorite game of Black Jack at which he was a dab hand.  Gambling, however,  sometimes lead to disputes, so he always carried his leather covered, lead filled blackjack, which had an amazing calming effect on it’s recipients. Black Jack dropped out of sight and after a long dry spell his black clad remains were found at the bottom of a stock catchment pond up on Hardscrabble Mesa nestled against a Black Jack pine log and  clutching his  blackjack in one hand with an Ace of Spades and the Jack of Clubs pinned to his chest with an ebony handled black jackknife.  Is that how Black Jack Tank got its name?  One wonders. The only known image of Black Jack is reputed to be not Jack as he lived but his shade which wanders still on the banks of Black Jack Tank in the dark hours. This is a Letterbox Hybrid geocache.  It functions just like any other geocache and has exchange items and a log.  Signing the geocache log is all that is required to claim full credit for the find.  The cache also contains the paraphernalia for Letterboxing, which entails exchanging rubber stamp images instead of exchange items.  Participating in this aspect of a hybrid geocache is purely voluntary. Letterboxing activity requires that the letterbox contain a rubber stamp and something to accept the impression of  rubber stamps.  The finder also needs to have a personal rubber stamp, an ink pad and something in which to record stamp images. The finder thus develops a collection of impressions from the stamps in the various letterboxes found and each letterbox develops a collection of impressions from the finders.  The stamps can be hand made or commercial. If you have the items you need for Letterbox Hybrids, you also have the items needed to participate in finding free standing Letterboxes.  More information is available at www.letterboxing.org
