Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz (Leipzig, 1 de julho de 1646 — Hanôver, 14 de novembro de 1716) foi um filósofo, cientista, matemático, diplomata e bibliotecário alemão.
A ele é atribuída a criação do termo "função" (1694), que usou para descrever uma quantidade relacionada a uma curva, como, por exemplo, a inclinação ou um ponto qualquer situado nela. É creditado a Leibniz e a Newton o desenvolvimento do cálculo moderno, em particular o desenvolvimento da Integral e da Regra do Produto. Demonstrou genialidade também nos campos da lei, religião, política, história, literatura, lógica, metafísica e filosofia.
Leibniz destacou-se no desenvolvimento da computação moderna (código binário) e do cálculo das integrais. Este último consiste, de uma forma rudimentar, no aumento do grau de uma função. Tendo como algumas aplicações o cálculo de áreas e volumes, determinar equações da velocidade a partir da equação da aceleração, processamento de sinal, entre outros.

Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz (Leipzig, 1st of July 1646 – Hanover, 14th of November 1716) was a philosopher, scientist, mathematic, diplomatic and German librarian.
It was attributed to him the creation of the term “function” (1694), which he used to describe a quantity related to a curve, for example, the inclination or a point in that curve. The development of the modern calculus is credited to Leibniz and Newton, in particular the development of the integral and product rule. He also demonstrated geniality in the fields of law, religion, politics, history, literature, logic, metaphysic and philosophy.
Leibniz stood out in the development of the modern computation (binary code) and integral calculus. The last one, in a rudimentary way, is the increase of the degree of a function. Having applications in the calculus of areas and volumes, the determination of the velocity equation trough the acceleration equation, signal processing, inter alia.
