Geocache Description:

Listed coordinates are for the "Women's Gate." One of the gated entrances to Central Park. This gate is just south of the "Ladie's Pond" which was originally underneath the Eaglevale Arch and intended to be a place that women could skate without worrying about showing their calves or ankles to the men. The cache is not there, but is a short walk away.

Did you know that there are nearly 200 statues in Central Park? Now, knowing that, can you take a guess how many of them feature women? Would you be surprised to know that it's less than twenty? And of those statues not a single one represents a real, historic female figure. Some represent a fictional character, or a mythological being. Some represent an abstract concept like "Painting" or "Architecture" as seen on the Hunt Memorial, "Hope" at the Albert Thorvaldson statue or "Victory" from the Sherman Memorial. But most are just figurative, symbolic women like the ones on the Untermeyer Fountain in the Conservatory Garden, or on the Maine Memorial at Columbus Circle.

Of the statues that feature women or girls, there are only 9 females that could be legitimately named, on 7 statues. Your job here is to name them, then place the names in the puzzle grid below in the pink and orange rings of the puzzle grid. You must place them following these rules:
  • If their name has the word "The" at the beginning, ignore it and don't put it in the grid.
  • The three from the same statue are also on the same ring, but the royalty (who are alphabetical) are separated from the commoner.
  • Two of the names that start with vowels follow a name that ends with the same vowel.
  • The longest name is on the orange ring, and it appears between a name that features a female parent and the name of a girl who shares her statue with her male parent.
  • The two women who spoke in iambic pentameter are together and in alphabetical order.
  • The man who shares her statue dedicated his work to Lobkowitz, but based on the statue he should have dedicated it to this Muse and her cithara, unusual though the choice may be.
  • She may appear in two statues but you should only count her once and name her once.
  • The first name on the pink ring once confessed to having stolen a garden, and she is the only one where you should use both a first name and a surname.
