The Barn Chapel stands in Great Totham South along Prince of Wales Road with much newer residential properties on either side. This timber framed and weather-boarded building originally dates back to the 17th century, although 18th and 20th century renovations have been made to the thatched roof. It is built of lath, wood and plaster and Large beams in the barn are thought to originate from the nearby Maldon Barges.
The single storey chapel has four windows comprising of small paned horizontal sliding sashes and a vertically boarded door to the left. Inside, the chapel is plainly furnished with chairs, rather than pews. There is no choir and no stained glass windows.
Now Grade II listed, the building became a chapel in 1822 when local plough man, Mr Isaac Foster, donated the barn for a place of worship for non-conformists after hearing Raven, a ploughman, preaching to his fellow workers. ,Foster Road in Great Totham was named because it was built on Mr Foster's land and Harvey Road is named after his son.
In addition to a Sunday service, a healing service is held every Thursday evening.
