An easy off-set multi, the cache is a few hundred metres from the given co-ordinates. This is also the starting point for "vectis photo nano" (GC2PCA9) The cache has gone missing a couple of times; please make sure this new one is not visible to the casual passer-by, 😊 Thank you.
St Edmund's church is a real treasure. Juggles (himself) is working just down the road from here, so I (“M”) took the opportunity to bring Church Micros to The Island, and extra visitors to this lovely church.
The Church was built originally as a private chapel for the local Manor House and dates from approx 1087. It has lots of interesting features; I liked the entrance doorway and the stained glass windows (which I believe were only restored recently).
The cache can be done in about 15 minutes, but I think it is worth allowing more time to appreciate the church.
There seems to be a very busy community, both in terms of church activity and restoration of the building. A group were hard at work on the wall when I did my recce for this cache. Further information is available from literature inside the church (for a small fee) or from this web site:- St.Edmunds
Now for the cache;
Go to the north side of the church where you will find an unusual head stone marking the grave and memorial to two brothers, the inscription is a little difficult to read, so I have typed it in easier to read script with blanks for you to fill in;
on one side:-
Here lies Ridgemay Ernest age AB third son of Alfred and Ernestine Hewitt of Lisle Court, Wootton.
His boat was overwhelmed by the sea off Gurnard in the gale of August 31 CDEF
After bravely battling with the waves for G hours til he reached shoal water off Stansore Point. He died of exhaustion.
And on the other side:-
In memory of Charles Romilly, the eldest son, who died age HI in South Africa on Feb 1st JKLM
