Geocache Description:

The line, and the crossing here, between Newton Abbot and Moretonhampstead was opened by the Moretonhampstead & South Devon Railway in July 1866 and passenger services ceased in 1959. The crossing keepers cottage remains but sadly it is not in the greatest of conditions - it is Grade 2 listed so hopefully it will be renovated at some point. This beautiful line was never closed between Newton Abbot and Heathfield and indeed excursions occurred as recently as 2002. Then, in December 2011 it was announced that this section of the line would be re-opened to facilitate the transport of timber from Heathfield to North Wales. In the same month a timber siding was opened here, to allow the timber to be loaded onto the freight trains. Due to the lack of a passing loop at Teignbridge, the train and its empty wagons continues up the line to Heathfield where the engine would run around the wagons using the loop in the disused station. The empty freight train then headed back to the timber sidings at Teigngrace to be loaded. Loading of the timber was carried out by the lorries that bring the timber to the sidings. This operation has now ceased and the line is disused. However there is a new project up and running intent on bringing back passenger services to this line.
