Tato keška je věnována vzpomínce na vojáka, který padl velmi mladý v boji za svobodu a demokracii země, jejíž nebyl ani občanem a ve které neměl on sám ani žádné příbuzné. Jestli a proč se války dějí, o tom dnes nebudeme číst ani polemizovat, ale zavzpomínáme na osud mladého muže - chlapce, jež byl jediným synem své matky, žijící bez manžela a otce svého dítěte. Nikdo se nemůže divit, že si tato zničená žena vzala po mnoha letech utrpení ze ztráty jediného syna život. Těchto osudů je v historii lidstva nespočet, což ale nijak nesnižuje vážnost každého jednoho z nich. A proč zrovna voják této armády a ne jiné ? A proč zrovna tato válka a ne jiná ? Myslím, že to není v důsledku pro truchlící vůbec důležité, jelikož jsou si ve vzpomínce a ztrátě všichni na světě rovni nehledě na politické smýšlení, národnost, rasu či barvu pleti. Neptejte se prosím, proč tento příběh v České republice a na tomto místě. Místo těchto otázek prosím raději zastavte na minutu svůj životní spěch a věnujte vzpomínku tomuto chlapci.

Popis incidentu

George Neville, A/3rdRecBn/3rdMarines vzpomíná....

Dvě přepravní helikoptéry CH-46 Sea Knight vysadily průzkumný tým jihozápadně od Cam Lo. Tým zasáhl těžký kontakt nepřítele a posléze byl úspěšně vyzvednut. Stejný tým byl vysazen o 2 hodiny později. Při tomto vysazení byla jedna helikoptéra CH-46 pilotovaná 1st Lt. Bertem L. Nalem a 1st Lt. Davidem W.McCleerym (HMM-164) sestřelena. Helikoptéra začala hořet, přesto všichni na palubě byli schopni opustit stroj. S výjimkou Recon LCPL Ronalda Longaneckera, který v plamenech nalezl svou smrt. Tento incident byl první z mnoha, kdy byl stroj sestřelen v provincii Quang Tri a Longanecker byl první Marine KIA /killed in action – zabit v akci / v Quang Tri Province.

"První hlídka zóny byla asi 4,5 mil jihozápadně od Cam Lo uzavřena v hřebenové oblasti po všech stranách. Jediný únik byl možný u Rao Vinh, kde řeka vtékala do oblasti a opouštěla průsmyk. Způsob taktiky hlídky pro opuštění zóny byl stejný.

Al Gordon byl v první helikoptéře, která provedla vysazení a vzpomíná......

"Zadní poklop spadl, a já jsem běžel dolů po rampě do trávy a následoval jsem Raye. Kryli jsme se za stromy a já sledoval naše helikoptéry ve vzduchu, jak se snaží zůstat mimo dosah a napadlo mě , co se sakra bude dít dál…
Pak jsme dostali zprávu, že se do zasažené oblasti blíží stíhačky a měli bychom označit naší pozici. Tak jsem vzal barevný panel a běžel před náš týl a pak už jsem byl jen fascinován tím, jak se ve vzduchu oběvilo kouřové znamení, aby náš tým nepřišel pod palbu… teď se vše odehrávalo ve vzduchu.. Pozemní boj s námi jako diváky. "

"Bojové helikoptéry Huey /UH-1C/ přiletěly jako první," vzpomíná Ray Strohl. "Vždycky jsme měli dvě v okolí v průběhu těchto DMZ / demilitarized zone/ hlídek. Provedli první úder na straně kopce. Sedící mezi stromy a přemýšleje o svém osudu nemusel dlouho čekat, než bylo první družstvo průzkumu z CH-46 pod palbou vyzvednuto.

Četa byla letecky přepravena devět kilometrů zpět do Dong Ha. Muži začínali rozbalovat, když přišla zpráva, že se všichni ihned vrací. Během hodiny, byla četa zpátky ve vzduchu. První helikoptéra s Gordonem Strohlem a poručíkem Terrebonnem klesla až do plánovaného LZ / landing zone – místa přistání /a ihned byla zasažena nepřátelskou palbou. Před tím se týmu podařilo vyskočit a helikoptéře se pod neustálou palbou podařilo jako zázrakem vzdálit. Druhá helikoptéra už tolik štěstí neměla. První stroj se pokusil varovat druhý, aby se okamžitě stáhl pryč, ale země již byla v plamenech a druhá helikoptéra ztratila kontrolu nad řízením. Pokoušeli se vyhodit ven palivo, ale byli donuceni k nouzovému přistání. Pilotovi se ještě podařilo letět na krátkou vzdálenost na západ, ale pak stroj začal padat a převracet se. Vzniklým požárem helikoptéra vybuchla a mariňáci na palubě bojovali o to, dostat se oběma stranami ven z hořícího stroje. Helikoptéra se otočila a s burácením ze zapřela o zem. Stalo se to nedaleko první helikoptéry a muži z první jednotky se snažili poklopy u bezpečnostních zón pomoci mariňákům z havarovaného stroje. Al Gordon a poručík Terrebonne měli bohužel na své straně rotující zbytky vrtule a nemohli se kvůli záchraně dostat do helikoptéry.

"Přistáli jsme kousek pod CH-46 a ti kluci byli schopni dostat se ven. Běžel jsem za nimi, Terrebonne byl hned za mnou. Helikoptéra ležela na boku a já jsem vylezl po stroji a podíval se oknem dovnitř. Dodnes vidím Longaneckera jak sedí a je zády opřen o převrácenou stranu helikoptéry. Byl mrtvý, ale jeho oči hleděli přímo před sebe…. Pak mi vnitřní hlas zavelel, abych to hořící peklo okamžitě opustil. Požár začínal nabírat na intenzitě a vše kolem bylo rozžhavené. Všichni ostatní se dostali ven. Někteří z nich měli zranění po pádu helikoptéry, všichni však přes plameny hořícího stroje dokázali uniknout. Začal jsem utíkat a když jsem byl asi padesát metrů od zřícené helikoptéry, stroj vybuchl a vylétl do vzduchu vysoko nade mnou. "

Strohl nemůže přesně říct, co se dělo ve vrtulníku, protože byl součástí obranného postavení v okolí incidentu .

Při nehodě byl jeden muž zabit a sedm jich bylo zraněno.
