The Magic Bridge Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

usberlin: The '"Magic Bridge" has been the highlight of the "Riverwalk" and could ony been reached by the beautiful tour through the Kotsifou River.
Now a local guy decided to build a tavern next to it and use the bridge to connect a parking place with the tavern. The old stonewall that was hiding the cache was knocked down and the bridge lost its entire "Magic". Another piece of nature is lost forever.

Forever? Maybe if no one is visiting this tavern there might be an abandoned lost place in a few years and magic will come back.

Until then the cache may rest in the archive in peace.

Geocache Description:

Riverwalk adventure up the beautiful Kotsifou Gorge. Climb over rocks and walk in a stream and enjoy the nature!! Somewhere in the middle of nowhere there is a magic bridge...

After you found "Galapagos on Planet P" and "The Old Mill" there is another challenge waiting for you.You will need some equipment to do this: Get some waterprooved shoes (you may ask at "Galapagos on Planet P" to borrow some if you don't have your own) and wear shorts and an old T-Shirt!

You will walk in a small river for a few hours. A little backpack is recommended to carry your road shoes, food and a camera. The entire roundtrip from Plakias will take about 3-6 hours, depending on physical condition and the time you take to enjoy the nature.

Walk from Plakias to the Old Mill (and find the cache there) and then get into the little stream called "Kotsifou" and walk up this river.

Don't try this when it's raining in the mountains as the little stream might become a big river. There is no footpath beside the river so you will stay with your feet in the water most time. You need to climb several rocks and through some small waterfalls - but this can be done by almost everybody.

Enjoy the nature and the peaceful surrounding. The walk is also a good option on a very hot day in summer (lots of shade and cool clear water round you feet) or when it's windy in Plakias Bay as it is very calm in the valley even when the winds blows you off the beach.

On your way you will pass another old mill - there is the only place to get out from the river on half way.

Nice lakes in the river with waterfalls invite you for skinny dipping :)

After 2 or 3 hours you will find a big pool and the "Magic Bridge".

The path that was leading from the olive grooves on one to the other side of the valley is overgrown. The only reasonable way to get onto the bridge is to come through the river and then to climb up.

Once you are on the bridge you might try your GPS but the coverage is poor. Use your eyes and your experience! It's easy to find! The path to that place is the challenge. It's possible and recommended to walk up to the source (another 30 minutes - more rock climbing but also more beautiful waterfalls). At the source there is a big concrete platform and to your right there is an exit to a footpath just 10 meters away. This footpath is leading you within 15 minutes on the east side of the valley to a viewpoint towards Plakias. There you can decide to turn right and walk downhill back to the old mill (5 minutes) or to stay on the footpath which is recommended if you want to go up to Mirthios (15 minutes) to enjoy a nice meal in one of the four fantastic tavernas there. Note: The cache will be available from March to November.

Small note on cache maintenance: Kreta-Flo, who is a permanent resident, will assist if needed.
