Geocache Description:

Yellow Olympic Ring - Cache #6

By agreement of the members of the creation team, The Sussex Olympic Rings group of 65 caches will be archived on September 19th, 2016. Thanks for your understanding.

This series of 65 puzzle caches has been placed to celebrate the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics. Each ring is set by different cachers and contains 11 or 12 hides plus a bonus. The whole design is over 4km across. You will need to find all caches for a ring in order to find the bonus and complete the ring.

There are three Medal caches above the rings, Bronze, Silver and Gold. See the Bonus cache descriptions for how to find them. See the Gold Medal cache page for full series credits.

The cache is NOT at the published co-ordinates.

Parking

Two significant, free, parking locations have been added as waypoints on all the Yellow Ring caches. These are not necessarily the best place to park for all the caches, but you should consider them seriously where they are reasonably near the final co-ordinates you have successfully had confirmed by GeoCheck. Where more appropriate parking locations are available, some of these have been noted as parking waypoints in Geocheck. You may be able to download these.

At the time of placing, the cache contains the logbook, a small pencil and sharpener (though best to bring your own pen), and a few swaps including some Olympic/Paralympic goodies!

PARACROSS

In this sport, there are no special rules. You can start at any one of the 34 numbered positions on the grid in the box but, to finish the game, you will need to think out of the box. Caching wit will be useful when playing this game, as well as for the cache itself!

The theme is the Paralympics. Many, but not all, of the answers relate to this subject and can be found in the pdf Paralympics 2012

Alert: You are about to download a file that contains further details needed to find this geocache. As the cache owner, I represent that this file is safe to download although it has not been checked by Groundspeak or by the reviewer for possible malicious content. Download this file at your own risk.

No disability classifications have been established for this sport so, if you think you need one, there’s no help here. You can always PAF though; unless all your friends are also your competitors in this game!

Once you have completed the game, you should have found all the information you need to work out the correct co-ordinates for the cache. What you will have is a set of words for the Across clues and and a set of words for the Down clues. You now need to total the individual letters in the Across clues, and then total the individual letters in the Down clues.

Some letters are common to both directions but that's not a problem. You should have 78 Across letters and 95 Down letters. You need to substitute the number of individual Across letters you have in the formula for the Northing, and the number of individual Down letters you have in the formula for the Westing, as follows:

N 51° 0A.BCD W 0° 0E.FGH

where

A = (p+w+x+y)/u
B = (b+k+r+t)/e
C= (n-o-r+s+v+x)*g
D= (c-h+i+m)/d

and

E = (d+e)/(v-u)
F= (b+g+l+o)/w
G= (a-c+k+n-p+s)/m
H= f-h+i-j+r-t

note: * means multiply and / means divide

These formulae have changed, as at July 12th 2013, because of a need to move the cache again (see Temporarily Disable Listing log of this date).

Solving the formulae will give you a set of co-ordinates to run through Geocheck.

For those who have previously solved the puzzle and have a solution for the original co-ordinates passed through Geocheck (there seem to be quite a few) please make the following correction to your solution and any waypoint you may have created for the final location:

Add .080 to the Northing, and add .052 to the Westing. Remember this is only for those who already have a checked solution – NOT for new solvers of the puzzle using the above formulae.

Happy Caching!
