I have ridden past here many times and have often spotted this plaque by the side of the road and wondered what it was for. I thought it would be a good place to put a cache, so here it is.
I have been told that the original Glenrowan was further down the hill on the old Hume Highway than it is today. When the railway arrived in 1873, it was decided to make the town at the top of the hill so that trains could stop there and have an easy run down, rather than stopping down the hill and then having to regain momentum to go up the hill. The original township is now farmland.
The Farmers Arms Hotel was originally the Police Barracks. The Post Office was next door. From 1862 the town was used by Cobb & Co as a stop-over to change horses, and for passengers to rest and grab a meal. There were several hotels in the area.
Bricks from the Farmers Arms Hotel were used in the construction of the new police station in 1888 and in modern times many were utilised in the floor and walls of local business Cobb & Co. (NedKellysWorld).
There is evidence of a flat area behind the plaque and some fruit trees to the left that may have been part of the garden....
