Geocache Description:

A simple one - but of archeological interest

The idea for this simpel drive by cache really came by driving along the location. Coming from the direction of Zaros because we did some very nice caches from Omilos the Kamaraiko gorge and Digenis lake . We saw this ancient area directly behind the road and thought ... Zaros, aqueduct, Gortys... So we stopped, found an appropriate hiding place and decided to install a simple cache which should build a bridge between Zaros and Gortys as source and destination of this aqueduct and the water which was carried down the hills. By the way, a profane plastic bottle filled with mineral water called 'ZAROS' gets a very special meaning in this context. It might be seen as a kind of bridging between the past and the present thinking of what inhabitants of this region managed to build in former centuries to get 'this' fresh water from the Zaros region to Gortys. Maybe the area of Gortys would never have become that important that it got in the past without the possibility of building this aqueduct which brought water from the mountains down to Gortys. So even if this is a simple drive by cache, take a little time, close your eyes and think about how the aqueduct and the surrounding area may have looked like in the past. If you ever visit the excavation site of Gortys (a nice cache by wind&water) think a second time about the importance of the Gortys aqueduct ... would Gortys really have exist without? No one knows ...
Unfortunately we could not find any established information during our research about this special archeological site were the cache is placed. In case we get some details in future we will add these to this listing (if you've got some helpful details please let us know ... many thanks!)

Parking here is a little bit difficult, you have to find a place at the side of the road

Nevertheless the cache is hidden and you have to remove 'something' to get it – please do this carefully! We recommend to be very careful grabing into holes or other unclear areas – especially if you are searching together with kids. You should know that there are some kinds of animals which could harm you more or less. It is not very likely to encounter these animals while you are on your cache tour. But it is better to know about any possible risks!

Many thanks to WIND&WATER for supporting our cache in case maintenance is needed!

We wish you happy hunting!
