Proveniente do árabe "al" e do latim "caput aquae", que significa captação de água, a povoação de Alcabideque possui um importante monumento da época romana.
Situado a cerca de 3 Km Conímbriga, o Castellum de Alcabideque é uma pequena torre de construção romana que servia essencialmente para captar e elevar a água para o seu posterior transporte, através de um aqueduto, até à cidade de Conímbriga.

The Conimbriga aqueduct starts at Alcabideque where the original collecting basin of the spring water is still used as the local village pond.
Next to the pond are the impressive ruins of a castellum which acted as a cleaning basin. After 3,5 km the water entered to the town of Conimbriga partly carried by a substructure and ending in a castellum aquae of complex structure, the actual purpose of which is still unclear (cleaning tank and / or basin to slow down the speed of the flowing water ?) After passing this structure the water was brought to the southern bath house and to the forum of Conimbriga.

O aqueduto ora é subterrâneo ora assenta numa sapata junto ao solo, até aos últimos 170 metros onde passa a correr sobre arcos, (que eram 16, restando apenas um) e mais tarde sobre um paredão, voltando a ser subterrâneo e acabando nas grandes termas da cidade. Tem uma extensão total de 3550 m. A época de construção remonta provavelmente ao séc. I onde o aqueduto integrou-se no plano de urbanização da cidade de Conímbriga, na época de Augusto. Mais tarde, na época de Cláudio, passa a funcionar como esgoto, sendo a água distribuída por canos de chumbo.

For most of their length the early aqueducts were simply channels bored through the rock, from the water intake in the hills almost to the distribution cistern in the city. The depth of the channel below ground varied so as to maintain a constant, very shallow gradient (less than 1/200) throughout the length of the aqueduct; vertical shafts were bored at intervals to provide ventilation and access. Only in the final stretches was the conduit raised on arches, to give a sufficient head for distribution of the water within the city.

No séc. III/IV foram construídas duas cisternas provavelmente solidárias com o sistema de defesa. Depois das Invasões Bárbaras e da destruíção do aqueduto, foi abandonada a sua funcionalidade. Presentemente é tido como monumento histórico-cultural, estando a torre de captação inserida num bonito lago, na povoação de Alcabideque.
