Gauntlet 2012 - Sticks & Stones Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

seldon: With much sadness I archive this cache. The final stage was indeed gone - the glow-in-the-dark skeleton that was in it was left hanging at the very spot the cache had been. The cache was not destroyed on the spot, nor could I find any parts of it in the vicinity, so it was taken in total by someone. Hard to understand, since the sticks device inside was useless without having done the preceding stages, and the few dollars the rest of it were worth would hardly seem worth lugging out of the park. I thought that this far back in the park would be safe for large stages, but apparently not. I always understand the possibility of caches getting muggled, but this one saddens me more than usual - I felt really good about the experience it offered to cachers. The cache makes no sense without the final stage, and remaking it is not going to happen, so I picked stages up this morning.

On a side note, it was interesting to see how sections of the trail have changed in a major way in the last year, and will continue to due so, due to nature being nature.

No trackables were listed in the cache, so that is a good thing.

For you who are watching this cache, please spread the word that it is gone to other cachers you know who might have had it on their list to do this fall.

Geocache Description:

Just when you thought it was again safe to go back to the forest and hills, another Gauntlet is thrown down. A seven-stage multi-cache (more or less, depending on how talented you are), an overall (round-trip) hike of about 2-3 miles (again, depending on how skilled you are) from the parking area on the east side of Rice County Wilderness Park. Few will make the effort, how many will finish the journey?

Lots of sticks in the woods. Lots of stones. Put them together, and you can call me whatever names you want, but it seems like a natural. A physical and mental challenge. The trek may shorter that other Gauntlets (I'm not sure), but oh, those lovely hills. A really nice trail is available for part of the journey. The rest of the way, not so much, though the trail-less parts do not have thick brush. A number of other caches are in the area, lots to find if you haven't been here before.

The hills and trees can create gps signal bounce, so be patient. The stages are meant to be found, even in difficult areas.

5/14/12 - It seems that cachers are getting the correct coords at stage 4, and yet are having difficulty locating the next stage. Go to the coords you get from stage 4, stand (or sit, if you prefer) on a stump and think, look around, think some more, and find it. Consider this stage as the "find it" challenge part of this Gauntlet.

Many cachers say they are not in it for the numbers. Here's a chance to prove it. One smiley, a lot of effort; you will remember this one. So, what say you - local cachers, those from outlying areas, Twin Cities, Timbuktu, wherever - it's out there, waiting....
