Geocache Description:

A CACHE ON GIOFYROS RIVER FOOTBRIDGE NEAR THE PANCRETAN STADIUM.

Pancretan Stadium is a sports stadium located in Heraklion on the island of Crete.

It was completed on December 31, 2003, and officially opened on August 11, 2004, just before the beginning of the 2004 Summer Olympics to host the football match Greece vs. Switzerland.

It has a capacity of 27,000 seats.

Nowadays the stadium serves many needs of local athletes on a variety of sports.

The stadium is currently the home ground of Superleague football team Ergotelis.

The bridge is a pedestrian river overpass aiding people to cross the Giofyros river.

-------------------------------------------------------

The river Giofyros or Diakoniaris is located in the northern prefecture of Heraklion and is one of the longest rivers of the island.

The river is watered by several tributaries close to the village of Profitis Ilias and flows to the sea next to the Pancretan Stadium.

Unfortunately, near its mouth, it looks neglected allthough there is action lately to improve the area.

Due to its abused condition inside the city of Heraklion, almost none of Cretans can imagine that this river forms, even today, some very beautiful landscapes.

Close to the village of Profitis Ilias, it shapes deep valleys and on its banks rich vineyards and olive groves grow.

Near the settlement Tsagarakis the valley turns to a narrow gorge and a narrow stone passage traps the water in a natural barrier. There, a small waterfall and some old mills compose an amazing landscape.

There are reports that the river once hosted a Temple of Athena, which has not been yet located.

Moreover, near the village of Hani, you could visit a small stone bridge (dating back in 1690) that once connected the city of Heraklion to the plain of Messara.

In another part of Giofyros, near the village of Kyparissi, the river forms yet again a beautiful canyon with dense vegetation and several small waterfalls.
