Geocache Description:

The cache is located on the top of Mount Mat Cincang which offers a great panoramic view on the island. On clear days you might also be able to see Thailand. Cachers are required to use the cable car (30 MYR) to get to the cache coordinates and should not be afraid of heights.

The Langkawi cable car is one of the major attractions in Langkawi. It provides an aerial link from near Burau Bay Resort at Teluk Burau to Lagkawi’s second highest peak, which is also the location of the Langkawi Sky Bridge. The total length is 2.2 km (1.4 mi). It was officially opened in 2003.

If history is about past human civilization going back to few thousand years ago then geology is about the history of the earth on which man lives; and goes back to its beginning some 4.600 million years ago.

In geology James Hutton’s Principle of Uniformitarianism states that: “The present is the key to the past.” Geologists study present processes, environments and geography on earth and use it to interpret past processes, ancient environment and ancient geography.

On the top of Mount Mat Cincang you can find sandstone. The ripple marks on the top surface of the sandstone are parallel-created ripples slightly asymmetric in cross-section. From the location of the refraction-side the wave propagation and the direction of the landmass can be derived (see logging task). Applying the principle of Uniformitarianism, the ripple marks on the top of the sandstone is interpreted to have been formed by waves in ancient tidal continental shelf area about millions of years ago. Mat Cincang area was than a shallow sea area. Due to the wave movement the characteristic ripples were formed. Due to pressure the sedimentation of sand was transformed into sandstone. In the Cambrian period more than 500 million years ago tectonical movements occurred and led to the rise of Mount Mat Cincang. Hence, the sandstone that was formed due to wave movements was raised high above sea level and can still be found on the top of Mount Mat Cincang.

Have a look at the rocks. Nearby you will find a plate stating some information. To log the cache please do answer the following questions:

1) Have a look at the sandstone. Derived from the refraction-side of the ripples: Which direction was the wave propagation in the ancient sea? In which direction was the landmass?

2) Take a photo of you and/or your GPS at the Top Station (optional).

Send your complete solutions to our geocaching address and write your log. We'll delete all reports without the correct answer. It would be nice if you could post a picture as well.

Please be aware, we won't accept logs without answering the question. It is not neccessarry to enter the skybridge. Please have a look around. You'll find some sandstone. This is sufficient to answer the question. Make an educated guess!

Have a lot of fun and enjoy.
