Geocache Description:

This one is on the public footpath but park in Thrapston or Islip and walk the 1/2 mile down to it. There should be a pencil and some small items in the bag.

This is one in a series of caches, some are part of a multicache, some are traditional. They have been illustrated with the help of Thrapston and District Historical Society to take you round the varied history of Thrapston. It is designed to be an easy stroll of a couple of miles and is suitable for children. Take a pencil or pen as some are nanos.

If you’re doing the series, park in the Bull Ring car park (see No.1). There are places you can have tea and cake or several family-friendly pubs in the High Street.

It is possible that the River Nene has had a mill on this site since Domesday times. In the mid 1880s, the mill had two water wheels and an auxiliary portable steam engine was used at times of low or high water. These were used to grind sacks of corn. Eels were also caught and transported to London.
In 1950, it was converted to electricity but by 1960 it was uneconomic due to cheap competition from overseas grain and is now a private residence.
If you want, you can join the Nene Way from here. This is a footpath 110 miles long which roughly follows the course of the River Nene starting in Badby, Northamptonshire and ending in Sutton Bridge, Lincolnshire
