ENG: An old ruin of a 14th century church with several interesting grave stones. Follow road sign "Kyrkoruin" and drive trough the farm up to the official parking for visitors.

ENG: The medieval church is believed to originate from the 14th century since a silver coin from this period were found during the demolition. The church had entrances from both north and south. South was the main entrance while the north was built by superstitious reasons. The western entrance was built in connection with the renovation in 1874 and the porch outside the south entrance was demolished. Unfortunately it was also decided to smash and destroy the furniture and to announce the auction of the beautiful and expensive treasures. Memories of the past and things of art historical value now spread over the parish as toys and liquor cabinets.
West of the church there was a bell tower and the foundations can be seen today. The church was abandoned in 1897 when the new church in Gödestad was completed. 100 riksdaler (currency of that time) was paid for the demolition of the old but the demolition of the walls appeared to be too difficult and hence they still exist today.
Around the church there are several interesting tombstones where my personal favorite is the blessed farmhand Lars's tombstone from 1764 and is located to the south of the church. There are also some tombstones from the 17th century with the inscription in a circle.
As a curios tale it's worth mentioning that on a church meeting in 1817, the matter of the authorities concern of the thrift (to be careful with economy and resources) in Sweden was dealt with. The pastor asked the representatives of the parish regarding the trift and was told that there was hardly any parish were more thrifty and patriotic than Gödestad. For example, weddings and celebrations lasted usually only for two - three days and rarely more than four - five.
SWE: Medeltidskyrkan anses härröra från 1300-talet eftersom ett silvermynt från denna tiden påträffades vid rivningen. Kyrkan hade ingången både från norr och söder. Söderingången var huvudingång medan den norra var byggd av vidskepliga skäl. Den västra ingången byggdes i samband med renovering 1874 och vapenhuset utanför den södra ingången revs. Tyvärr beslutades även att slå sönder och rasera inventarierna samt att utlysa auktion på de vackra och dyrbara klenoderna. Minnen från forna tider och saker av konsthistoriskt värde spreds nu över socknen för att användas till leksaker och brännvinsskåp.
Väster om kyrkan fanns en klockstapel och grundstenarna kan ses än idag. 1897 övergavs kyrkan i samband med att den nya kyrkan i Gödestad stod klar. 100 riksdaler utbetalades för rivning av den gamla men rivningen av väggarna visades sig alltför svår och de står således kvar än idag.
Runt kyrkan finns ett flertal intressanta gravstenar där min personliga favorit är den saliga drängen Lars gravsten från 1764 och ligger till söder om kyrkan. Det finns även några gravstenar från 1600-talet med inskription i cirkel.
Som kuriosa kan nämnas att vid en kyrkostämma 1817 behandlades ärende om myndigheternas månhet om trogna undersåtars sparsamhet framförallt gällande utländska yppighetsvaror. Pastorn frågade då sitt kyrkoråd om sparsamheten i socknen och fick till svar att det knappast fanns någon församling som var mer hushållsaktig och patriotisk än Gödestad. T ex hölls bröllop och gästabud oftast bara i två - tre dagar och sällan mer än fyra - fem.
