Jumping Streets - Arbuthnot Street Traditional Geocache

This cache has been archived.

onecrazycanadian: Hi,

I'm archiving this listing since it's been at least 2 weeks since I last contacted you and there has been no response. If you correct the problem I indicated at some time in the near future I will take another look at it and may consider unarchiving the cache.

Thanks

Geocache Description:

This is another cache in the series I’m doing in and around Winnipeg. These series of caches will focus on streets that “jump” and continue on.

This cache is located on Arbuthnot Street in Earl Grey. Arbuthnot runs north/south and starts at Grosvenor Avenue runs south to Grant Avenue, then it stops or “jumps over" Grant Avenue and continues on where it ends at Pembina Highway.

It turns out that the original name of the street was Aynsley Street, as far back as 1911. It was named for Donald Aynsley Ross (1877-1956). Donald was an Engineer (not driving trains), and in 1906 he made a partnership with Ralph Benjamin Pratt and formed Pratt & Ross. Under this name he helped build Union Station, and the Winnipeg Civic Auditorium (now known as the Manitoba Archives Building).

Donald

In 1959 Aynsley Street was renamed to Arbuthnot Street. It was named for John Arbuthnot (1861-1931). John was elected the mayor of Winnipeg from 1901 to 1903. In his early employment he worked for the Canadian Pacific Railway. In 1896-1897 he was elected as an alderman for the city of Winnipeg. He then spent two years as chair of the City Parks Board (1898-1899). In 1901 he was elected mayor. He was a founding member of the St. Charles Country Club, and of the Winnipeg Automobile Club (which eventually became CAA Manitoba).

For the FTF there will be a FTF certificate, and a FTF geocoin. There will also be room for small tradeables.

Congrats to klblue on the FTF.
