This cache is placed in honor of our friend and neighbor, Uwe Schultz, who was the primary architect for the restoration of the Lahaina Seamen's Hospital. Uwe took out a $300,000 personal loan to restore it himself. "The interest back then was 16 percent, but I paid the loan back," Uwe explained. Sadly, Uwe died in 2012.
During the reign of Kamehameha the Great, unscrupulous masters of American and English whaling ships began dumping sailors in the Islands to lighten their loads before heading to Canton to trade. Records from the 1850s refer to 2,000 to 3,000 destitute sailors dumped on Hawaiian beaches during the month of October.
Hungry for food, drink and female companionship, they were an embarrassment to the American government, which persuaded Kamehameha III to lease this building as a center for the sick and disabled seamen of Lahaina.
The U.S. Seamen's Hospital was purchased in 1974 by the Lahaina Restoration Foundation and now stands completely restored. The report of the restoration architects is titled “Rendezvous in Lahaina”. It states: “While the stones and mortar of an old building have an intrinsic value and interest of their own, it is the many people who built and used them that give them real historical importance. In this respect, the Seaman’s Hospital has an unusually rich heritage."
