I oldtiden mente man, at alting var bygget op af fire elementer – fire grundstoffer.
De fire elementer var vand, ild, jord og luft.
Man mente, at hvert element havde sin særlige betydning.
Luft
Luften er det mest uhåndgribelige af de fire elementer. Vi har alle brug for luft for at kunne leve, men vi kan ikke se den.
Luften og himmelrummet har en ganske særlig betydning for menneskerne. Det er umuligt at se til himmelrummets ende. Derfor er der opstået mange forestillinger, om hvad der findes i det.
Det er også fra himlen, vi får det vejr, vi har. I gamle dage var man meget afhængig af, hvordan vejret blev. Derfor var det vigtigt at bede himlen om godt vejr. Man fandt også på ordsprog og læreregler om, hvordan man ud fra luften og himlen kunne vide, hvordan vejret ville blive.
I de fleste Kristendomskundskaber bor guderne i himlen. Man taler også om vejrguder. Sol, Vind og Regn er ofte blevet gjort til en slags personer.
