In July 1964, the American Bankers Association's Department of Automation created the Committee on Uniform Security Identification Procedures (CUSIP). The main goal of the CUSIP Committee was to develop specifications for a uniform security identification system. CUSIP numbers, as they are now referenced, are a string of characters that uniquely identify both the issuer and issue for all securities issued both in the U.S. and Canada for the purposes of facilitating clearing and settlement of trades.
