Geocache Description:

English

Originally, inhere there existed the so called “Memory” cache, which was placed by the Geocacher Bringer on the 27th September 2007. The “Memory” was our first found, and that is why we have always felt a very special involvement regarding it! When we first knew that it had been archived on the 9th of March 2011, we’ve decided to adopt it, and by this means it also turned to be our 1stHidden!:)
We took the chance and had her to make a facelift! :)

It is located very near the magnificent Palácio da Ajuda, in the cosmopolitan city of Lisbon, and we can say that the Memorial Church (or Church of Memory) is one of the greatest treasures that the Portuguese Capital has to offer, not only to its inhabitants, but also to all its visitors.

Its construction started in the year of 1760, to celebrate the MEMORY of the failed attempt of the assassination, by the Távora family, of our King D. José, which occurred on the 3rd of September of 1758. In Portuguese memory means “memória”. The King D. José was returning from a rendezvous with a Lady of the Távora family, when his carriage was attacked and the King was wounded in his arm by a bullet. The Marquês de Pombal, who, by then, had already had problems with the Távora family, and enjoying absolute power in the Kingdom, did not loose the opportunity to take revenge, accusing them of plotting against the Royal Family.
In the year of 1759 all the Távora family was executed. In the Beco do Chão Salgado, in the Street of Belém (Rua de Belém), we can still find today a pillar to pay a tribute to the family.

The initial project was conducted by Giovanni Carlo Bibienna, an Italian architect and set designer whose work was very valuated at his time, and the leading of the works was committed to Mateus Vicente de Oliveira, who, in his turn, assumed the responsibilities initially assigned to the Italian architect.

Throughout its existence, the Memorial Church (or Church of Memory) passed through several hands had different owners and uses other than worship, for example it has been used as a grain silo. Has undergone renovations and improvements, but also suffered some damage, including destruction of its dome and balustrade, the result of a lightning bolt that struck in 1985.

The Church exhibits today a gracious neo classic style, with its inside containing essentially marble, bearing a special emphasis its pinnacle and the tomb of Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, the notorious Marquês de Pombal.
