The Heist Bay, a wonderfull piece of nature, and a nice viewing point on the coastline of Knokke-Heist. The cache is accessible the whole year.
NL: De Baai Van Heist
Langs de oostelijke strekdam van de Zeebrugse voorhaven is in de loop van de jaren 1980 het strand aanzienlijk verbreed. Door slibafzetting en zandverstuiving ontwikkelden zich op die strandvlakte kleiige slikjes en zandige strandduintjes, die geschikte biotopen bieden aan tal van zeldzame planten en dieren. Sinds 1997 geniet het gebied (ong. 36 ha) een wettelijke bescherming als Vlaams natuurreservaat.
De plantengroei op de duintjes bestaat vooral uit pionierssoorten als biestarwegras, zeeraket, zeepostelein, blauwe zeedistel en zeewolfsmelk. De kleiige slikjes herbergen zoutminnende planten van het slikke- en schorre milieu: zeekraal, klein schorrekruid, en zeeaster. Tot de karakteristieke broedvogels van het terrein behoren de dwergstern, de strandplevier, en de kuifleeuwerik. Deze soorten nestelen op de grond. Dwergstern en strandplevier verkiezen de schelpenbanken net boven het vloedmerk, de kuifleeuwerik geeft de voorkeur aan de jonge duinhoofdjes. In de wintermaanden is het gebied met talrijke wormen, schaal- en weekdiertjes wooral in trek bij steltlopers (drieteenstrandloper, bonte strandloper, scholekster,...) Tijdens de zomer vormen dwergsternen opmerkelijke gasten langs het laagstrand. Zwevend speuren ze naar kleine visjes die ze duikend verschalken. De 'Baai van Heist' vormt het enige strand langs de Vlaamse kust waar de strandplevier broedt.
Om verstoring van het legsel te voorkomen is het betreden van het reservaat tijdens het broedseizoen niet toegelaten. Buiten de broedperiode is het gebied toegankelijk voor wandelaars. Van de bezoeker wordt verwacht dat hij respect opbrengt voor fauna en flora door het naleven van de gedrags regels.
EN: The Flemisch nature reserve 'Heist Bay'
In the 1980s the beaches along the eastern breakwater of the Zeebrugge harbour widened considerably. Silt deposits and sand drifts have created little clayish mudflats and sand dunes on this plain, wich are now home to plenty of rare flora and fauna. In 1997 the area, wich covers about 36 hectares, received the legal status of a Flemish Nature Reserve to protect its flora and fauna.
The vegetation to be found on these low dunes mainly consists of pioneer species such as sand couch, sea rocket, sea pursiane, sea holly and sea euphorbia. The clayish mudflats are home to halophytic plants typical of these flats and salt marshes such as: glasswort, seablite and sea aster. Summer birds characteristic of this habitat are little tern, Kentish plover and crested lark. Those species build their nest on the ground. The little tern and the Kentish plover prefer nesting on the deposit of shells on the beach just above the high-water mark. The crested lark prefers the low sand dunes. In winter the area attracts many waders - beacause of the numerous worms, crustaceans and molluscs. In summer the beach abound with little terns, wich hover over the creeks and plunge-dive for small fish. The 'Heist Bay' forms the only area on the Flemish coast where little tern and Kentish plver nest.
To prevent disturbing the birds while nesting, the Nature Reserve is closed to the general public during the nidification period. Outside this period the area is open to walkers. Visitors are expected to treat flora and fauna with respect and to abide by the rules of conduct.
