Hot Rox Virtual Cache

This cache has been archived.

worldtraveler: It appears this virtual cache has outlived its usefulness, so it's time to archive and move on.
Thanks to all who made the long hikes, actually found new lava flows, and then reported the coordinates for others to follow. That was my purpose for creating this cache many years ago. I would have been content to let it remain active if geocachers had been content to only post legitimate logs, but it seems the lure of a smiley is stronger than integrity for far too many.

Geocache Description:

This is a virtual cache at an obvious attraction in an isolated location. Best viewed at NIGHT!

11/23/12 Logging requirement update: Do not post a "Found It!" log unless it includes at least one photo as described below AND the coordinates. Otherwise your log will be deleted.

Note: The posted coordinates are updated based on recent posts, but the cache location will continue to change.

Finding this cache may require visiting Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. Click the "Related Web Page" link above for entry fees and current activity information. It will require a round trip hike of indeterminate length due to the nature of the cache. The original coordinates were N19° 18.866' / W155° 03.029'. Please read recent logs for the last reported location, because the cache has already moved several miles.

If the lava is flowing, you should plan to arrive at the parking area with sufficient time to hike out to it before sundown. To claim your "Found it!", get as close as safely possible to an active flow, take a photo, and note the coordinates; then post both in your log entry.

If the lava is not flowing, you may alternately earn credit for finding this cache by including a picture of yourself and the coordinates at one of the "End of Trail" or "Road Closed" signs. The locations of the signs can also move, but recent reported locations are: N19° 17.929' / W155° 05.278' and N19° 18.134' / W155° 05.152'.

For your safety, you MUST wear shoes (no flip flops) and take plenty of water for the hike (there is no shade) and a flashlight for the return hike.
