Geocache Description:

The Hidden Pothole

As you travel West on Little Creek Road after leaving Hamburg Road, you will find your self stopping at a small limestone rock-cut.

You will notice at Ground zero, a larger then normal vertical split in the limestone rock-cut.

What you are looking at is a Pothole, that has had it's face side break away exposing the awesome feat Mother Nature has created .

But she had a bit of help from some small stones, sediment, water and time.

So just what is a Pothole, and how did it get here?

Limestone Potholes.

Limestone is a sedimentary rock composed largely of the mineral Calcite (calcium carbonate, CaCO3)

Caves, Potholes , and other natural formations have been formed by the action of acidic water on limestone deposits

As water flows through the limestone, some of the rock dissolves. This process can lead to the formation of cavities and small recesses.

When the water continues to flow over the recesses, it can start to move in a circular motion.

Small stones and grit get concentrated in the center of a forming whirlpool of water.

Over time the stones and grit, erode and grind their way deeper and deeper, creating a pothole in the limestone.

Depending on the amount of water and time, some of these potholes can grow quite large

Please be cautious at Ground Zero,
there are loose rocks to the left and right of the Pothole
Avoid these area's

Also, depending on the time of year,
you may get a bit wet gathering the required information below.

1. Get up close and personal with the pothole, LOOK UP, can you see where the water entered it?

2. What do you think caused the face of the Pothole came off, exposing it?

3. Is the pothole smooth and straight all the way to the top, why do you think that is?

4. Look at bottom of the pothole, do you think it will get deeper? Why?.
