A cache on the island of Kolokytha, near the small, recently renovated church of Agios Fokas.
The peninsula or island of Kolokytha –or Spinalonga , as the Venetians used to call it -expands opposite the town of Elounda, serving as a giant wave breaker. It is the habitat of several endangered species of birds, like Falco eleonorae and Larus audouinii, the Mediterranean seagull. In fact you can see many seagulls flying over your head and having a rest on the rocks, that is if they are not disturbed by the many noisy boats that bring tourists here in the summer.
Kolokytha is mainly rocky, there are, however, a couple of small sandy beaches on it. The sea water is crystal clear and snorkeling can be an unforgettable activity here. In winter time the visitor can enjoy vivid colors, birds flying, many different wild flowers with a fine scent and the peace and quiet of the place.
To go to the cache area you can walk or drive a two-km-long dirt road from the windmills of Elounda to the small, renovated church of Agios Loukas. Park your car at the given waypoint and follow the dirt road down towards the coast. It will soon become a clear path that passes by the ruins of an old basilica church – see WP1 – and, following the coast line direction north, leads you to the small, renovated church of Agios Fokas in 35 minutes. This church was built to honor the Byzantine Emperor Nikiforos Fokas, who liberated Crete from the Arabs in 961 AD. The path is quite clear and easy, however, good shoes are recommended.
The cache is a small, plastic container with a logbook, a pen and some goodies to trade. It is hidden under rocks, of course!
Please, mind the muggles that may be around and hide it again carefully!
