Santiago de Riba-Ul apresenta-se como uma terra industrializada e com uma história cultural muito antiga, de que é testemunho a banda de música mais antiga de Portugal, a Banda de Música de Santiago de Riba-Ul.
O nome desta freguesia tem por base o do seu orago e o da zona topográfica, que é a margem ou riba do rio Ul. De facto, já era assim designada num discutido documento datado de 922, embora em documentos posteriores a 1320, também se lhe atribua o nome de Vila Cova.
Diz-se ter havido em Vila Cova um convento. Pinho Leal pensa ser o Mosteiro de Santa Marinha: “É paróquia muito antiga e, segundo tradição, houve aqui um mosteiro de freiras bentas, que foi destruído pelos Mouros em 718. Não há vestígios dele. Diz-se que era na margem direita do rio Ul, que atravessa esta freguesia e lhe dá o nome.”
O seu padroado pertenceu ao Mosteiro de Cucujães, ao qual aparece ligada em 1139, na carta de couto do mosteiro, do qual passou, em meados do século XVI, metade para as freiras do Convento Avé Maria, do Porto, e outra metade para a comenda de S. Miguel, de Oliveira de Azeméis.
No reinado de D. Dinis, por bula dada em Avinhão, a 23 de Maio de 1320, pelo Papa João XXII, foi concedido a este rei por três anos, para subsídio de guerra contra os mouros, a décima parte das rendas eclesiásticas do reino, excepção feita às pertencentes à Ordem do Hospital. Em posteriores documentos, continua a denominar-se Vila Cova d’Ul, devido provavelmente ao facto de ter a sua igreja no lugar de Vila Cova. A mudança do topónimo de Vila Cova para o de Santiago, sugerem que tomou este nome ao dar-se a mudança de assento da igreja para o local onde actualmente se localiza a Igreja Matriz.
A freguesia de Santiago de Riba-Ul conserva mansões senhoriais, do tipo palacete, como é o caso da Casa dos Rebelos. Esta situa-se um pouco abaixo da igreja matriz, datando possivelmente do início do século XIX, com brasão eclesiástico composto por um escudo romano com as armas dos Rebelos.
O lugar do Outeiro e a sua Capela atrai a atenção dos mais distraídos, assim como a Capela e o Largo do Senhor da Campa. O circuito continua com o núcleo da já referida Casa dos Rebelos e da Casa do Comandante; a Capela e a Casa das Garreiras; o Edifício da Associação dos Socorros Mútuos, instituição fundada em 1884; a Casa Agrícola das Cortinhas e o núcleo da Igreja Matriz. As Alminhas dos Franceses, os núcleos rurais da Ponte do Salgueiro e da Quinta de Santiago, com uma grande casa e um espigueiro tradicional, completam a ronda por esta pequena aldeia. A Ponte do Salgueiro, sita no lugar do Salgueiro, classificada de Valor Concelhio é uma ponte medieval do século XIV, que corta o rio Ul, harmonizada por zona agrícola e campestre, valendo por isso uma visita obrigatória.

The parish of Santiago de Riba-Ul preserved stately mansions, mansion type, such as the House of Rebelos. This is located just below the church, possibly dating from the early nineteenth century, with ecclesiastical coat composed of a shield with the arms of the Roman Rebelos.
The place of Knoll and his chapel attracts the attention of the distracted, as well as the Chapel Square and the Lord of Campa. The circuit continues with the core of the aforementioned House of Rebelos and the Commander's House, the Chapel and House of Garreiras, the building of the Mutual Aid Association, an institution founded in 1884, the House Agricultural Cortinhas and the core of the Church. The Alminhas the French, the nuclei of rural Willow Bridge and Quinta de Santiago, with a big house and a traditional crib, complete the tour of this small village.
