Hanging about Scalford Tunnel Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

mono78v: As it seems land owner is no longer happy about caches in area I am archiving. I wonder if land has changed ownership? Anyway, due to other commitment I don't have time to contact land owner or do anything about resolving this issue I have chosen to archive. Lovely to read all the logs and see the joy this cache bought to finders.many thanks everyone. Mono78v. CO.

Geocache Description:

This is a very difficult cache located above the entrance to an old train tunnel. There is noting left of the track, but the tunnel remains. This cache is only retrievable by abseiling from the top of the tunnel. You should only consider this if your are completely competent and have the correct equipment.

This is a very difficult cache located above the entrance to an old train tunnel. There is noting left of the track, but the tunnel remains. The cache is a micro/nano containing only a log book. Bring your own pen. Getting to the location is fairly easy, it is next to a public footpath which runs between Landyke lane and Clawson lane, however retrieval of this cache is NOT as straight forward. it will require abseiling from the top of the tunnel. You should only consider retrieving this cache if your are competent in abseiling and setting up your own anchors. Specialist skills, knowledge, and equipment are required. Please don't even go near the drop unless you are 100% sure you are safe. There are several trees at the top which can be used as anchor points, if you are attempting this you should know exactly how to set up an anchor point!
As with anything of this nature, always tell someone where your going and what your doing. You search for this cache completly at your own risk, I take no responsibility!

From parking at Landyke lane you will get a view of the partially filled-in railway cutting approaching Scalford tunnel. This was part of the Great Northern Railway/London and North Western Railway line from Market Harborough to Bottesford via Melton Mowbray, which closed in 1964. Landyke Lane used to cross this deep cutting by a bridge which incorporated an aqueduct.
This tunnel is still in excellent condition, nearly 50 years after the last train passed through it.

Whilst your in the area there are a couple more good caches which i thought worth a visit;
35 mile view - (visit link) - quick park and grab with some great views.
Schrödinger’s Ghostly wormhole paradox - (visit link) - Nice clever and fun cache.
