Geocache Description:

It seemed such a shame to miss the leap second.

Every now and then, due largely to the action of the seas on the surface of the earth, an extra second has to be slipped into the calendar because the earth's rotation is being hindered by the friction. The days ARE getting longer. This one happens at 23:59:60 on 30th June. One second later it will be 00:00.

The first leap second was in 1972 and the most recent in 2008.

So this will be something of a flash mob event, somewhere between one second to midnight and midnight so far as I can work it out.

And it seemed a good idea to hold it on the meridian where we might just feel time get warped.

Judging by the normal practice, cachers will gather together a little before the event and might hang around a little afterwards.

So the event will officially start at 23:59:60 on 30th June and finish at midnight. It will be just one second long.

On this night there will not be 6 pips broadcast on the radio. There will be SEVEN. The event will be taking place between the 6th and 7th pip. Don't be late.
